Biography
Lorenz Dangel, born on 19 April 1977 in Würzburg, took piano and double bass lessons at a young age and performed in concerts with various ensembles, including as principal in the German National Youth Orchestra. In 1997 he began studying double bass and composition at the "Hanns Eisler" Academy in Berlin, followed by studies in film composition at the Munich Academy for Music and Theatre. After graduating in 2003, Dangel began further studies in composition at the Royal College of Music in London, which he completed the following year.
In 2005 he moved to Berlin, where he works as a freelance composer for film and stage. For his first feature film music for Benjamin Heisenberg's "Schläfer" ("Sleeper", 2005) he was awarded the prize for best music at the Max Ophüls Film Festival. In the following years, he composed music for Michael Dreher's thriller "Die zwei Leben des Daniel Shore" ("The Two Lives of Daniel Shore", 2009) and Heisenberg's highly acclaimed crime film "Der Räuber" ("The Robber"), which premiered in the Competition of the Berlinale 2010. For his music to the apocalyptic thriller "Hell" Lorenz Dangel was awarded the German Film Prize in 2012.
He then worked for television productions such as the thrillers "Davon willst du nichts wissen" ("You Don't Want to Know") and "Stärke 6" (both 2011) as well as the series "Add a Friend" (2012/2013) and the "Tatort" episode "Zwischen zwei Leben" (2014). For the big screen, he composed the music for Barbara Albert's "Die Lebenden" ("The Dead and the Living", 2012), as well as among others Christian Schwochow's "Westen" ("West", 2013), Benjamin Heisenberg's "Über-Ich und Du" ("Superegos", 2014), in which he also had a small guest appearance, and Christian Bach's "Hirngespinster" ("Flights of Fancy", 2014). For his music to Wolfgang Becker's art scene satire "Ich und Kaminski" ("Me & Kaminski", 2015), Lorenz Dangel was again nominated for the German Film Prize.
This was followed by a renewed collaboration with Barbara Albert, for whose historic drama "Licht" ("Mademoiselle Paradis", 2017) about a decisive period in the life of the blind Viennese pianist Maria Theresia Paradis (Maria Dragus), loosely based on Alissa Walser's novel "Am Anfang war die Nacht Musik", he wrote the film music.
After several television productions, including Matthias Glasner's unusual two-parter "Landgericht - Geschichte einer Familie", a Jewish family drama with Ronald Zehrfeld and Johanna Wokalek in the leading roles, he wrote the music for Christian Schwochow's film adaptation of the Siegfried Lenz classic "Die Deutschstunde" ("The German Lesson"). For this work, Lorenz Dangel was once again nominated for the German Film Award 2020.
