Biography

Carlos André Morelli was born in 1977 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He studied film direction at the private Universidad ORT in Montevideo, followed by a degree in screenwriting at the ESCAC film school in Barcelona, Spain. He came to Germany for the first time in 2008 with a scholarship for the DAAD's Berlin Artists' Programme. During this time he realised the short film "Warisover" (2010), for which he won the Arte Short Film Award at Filmfest Hamburg 2011. Morelli's other short films have also been shown at numerous international film festivals, including Rotterdam, Tampere, Oberhausen and Clermont Ferrand.

Back in Uruguay Morelli made his feature film debut with "Mi Mundial", a mixture of family, coming-of-age and sportsman's story. The film premiered in 2017 in the competition of the Busan Film Festival in South Korea. At the cinema release in Uruguay, "Mi Mundial" became the second most successful domestic film in the country's cinema history.

Morelli shot his second long feature film in his adopted country Germany: "Der Geburtstag" ("Many Happy Returns", 2019) about a father (Mark Waschke), who does not live with his family and for whom the stressful birthday celebration of his seven-year-old son becomes an existential experience. The intimate drama was awarded prizes at several festivals. The German theatrical release took place in June 2020, in view of the Corona pandemic, simultaneously in cinema and as VoD.

Besides his work as a filmmaker, Carlos André Morelli teaches screenwriting at universities in Latin America, Europe and China. He lives with his family in Berlin.
