Unterwegs als sicherer Ort
On The Move Is A Safe Place
"Autumn 1996. We leave Cologne. Beginnings of a search for evidence. I have known Peter Finkelgruen for twenty years. I have followed his work as a journalist. He has seen my films. In 1992, he gave me the manuscript for his book The House of Germany to read.
In it, he tells the story of his family who was driven out of Germany. He describes how his Jewish grandfather was murdered in 1942 in the Small Fortress of Theresienstadt, and he reports about his futile attempts to bring the murderer, the former SS man Anton Malloth before a court of law in Germany. It was only then that I understood what I had known for a long time: Peter Finkelgruen is a Jew in Germany. He has had all his experiences as a Jew. And preoccupation with the unatoned murder of his granfather was the beginning of his quest for his own origin. We are on the way to the most important stages in his life: Shanghai, Prague and Haifa." (Dietrich Schubert)
