He grew up in Trutmann, a small village in southern Switzerland. After taking final school examinations he began appearing in films and was drummer in a number of bands. He attended the European Film College in Ebeltoft in Denmark from 2005 to 2006 and studied ethnology and film in Zurich. In 2007 he took up studies in documentary filmmaking at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy; he is currently a Fulbright Fellow at San Francisco Art Institute.
