Artemisia

Frankreich Deutschland Italien 1997 Spielfilm

Rome, 1610. The church′s influence is all-pervasive. Particularly women are forbidden to do lots of things. But the 17-year-old Artemisia follows her own principles. Her father, the jobbing artist Orazio Gentilechi recognises his daughter′s artistic talent and tries to have her accepted at the art academy. But in vain. She carries on working for her father. When a fresco is to be done, the
church sends a famous painter, Agostino Tassi, to Orazio. Artemisia is
fascinated by Agostino′s style of working. Orazio arranges for her to
become Agostino′s pupil. Through him she learns a completely new view
of the world: perspective. Agostino is fascinated by the talented and
resolute girl. The two fall in love with each other. It is the first
time for Artemisia. When Orazio surprises them together, he reports
Agostino. Profoundly disappointed by her father who took her lover away
from her, Artemisia breaks with her family. She attains tragic fame
through the events and is able herself to become a painter.
