Die letzte Station
The Last Station
Young Nelu grows up in the poverty of the Romanian hinterland. When his grandfather dies, this marks the end of his youth. On the day after grandfather′s burial, Nelu sets off - weighed down with the hopes of his father - to the big city to learn a profession and increase the family′s standing.
Nelu′s quiet and understanding way with people, his constantly sad eyes are an invaluable advantage for Radvan Balan, the head of a private funeral parlour. In his trade, discretion and sympathy are required and Nelu is the ideal man for his enterprise. Feigned feelings and grotesque thoughts of one′s own interests are human shortcomings for which Nelu shows understanding. Until his father of all people dies whilst visiting his son. Despite all of the newly learnt, fashionable methods of professional burial, his father has a right to a traditional, honest burial and so Nelu sets off with the corpse on a journey back to the place where this still seems possible - back to their home...
