Born in Bailleul, Nord in France in 1958, he directed his debut feature film "Life of Jesus" in 1997; the film was selected for the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. His feature films "Humanity" and "Flanders" both won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes while "Die feine Gesellschaft" ("Slack Bay") and, most recently, the satire "France", starring Lea Seydoux as a famous journalist, also screened in competition at the festival. His biopic "Camille Claudel 1915" starring Juliette Binoche was invited to the Berlinale Competition in 2013.
