Born in Wunstorf near Hanover on 16.1.1948. He trained as a tax inspector and took a degree in teaching, becoming a filmmaker in 1972. He has made entertainment programmes for television and has received three nominations for the Golden Rose in Montreaux. He spent five years running a travelling cinema in a converted doubledecker bus.
