Klaus Stanjek studied Psychology and Biology with an emphasis on Anthropology. After traveling across Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America, he was engaged in cross-cultural research from 1974-1979 at the Max Plack Institute and earned his PhD. He then studied Documentary Film from 1979-1983 in Munich and became an instructor for documentary film techniques and aesthetics. He set up his own production company, Cinetarium, in 1983.

Since 1994 he has been a professor for Documentary Directing at the "Konrad Wolf" University of Film and Television and conducts international workshops, among others, in cooperation with the Iranian Film Academy. A selection of his films includes: "Christiania" (1977), "Mendzang Beti" (1981), "Waterlords" (1985), "Twilight" (1990), "Children of Utopia" (1999), "Year of the Fisherman" (1999), "Commune of Bliss" (2004), and "Sounds from the Fog" (2013).
