Born in Wuppertal, studied art, art history and German language and literature. Presented ZDF"s cultural magazine programme "Aspekte" from 1984-89 and hosted the ZDF series "Zeugen des Jahrhunderts" from 1989-2004. Has written for radio and television and published numerous books.
