Born in Stans, Nidwalden/Switzerland on 28 February 1955. He received instruction in directing and scenic writing from Krzysztof Kieczlowski and Edward Zebrowski. In 1989 he founded the Swiss production company Nordwest Film AG with cameraman Rainer Klausmann. Urs Odermatt has been working as director and writer in the fields of film, television and theatre since 1983.
