Biography

Welket Bungué was born on 7 February 1988 in Xitole, Guinea-Bissau. From 2005 on he studied acting at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisbon, Portugal, and at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a member of several Portuguese theatre groups. In 2007 he began to work as an actor for TV and cinema productions in Portugal. He was cast for various TV-series and numerous short films; in feature films he initially played small roles. From 2015 Bungué also directed several short films and documentaries. His debut "Bastien" (PT 2015) was nominated for the Portuguese Film Prize, the Sophia Award, as Best Short Film.

Welket Bungué went on to play major roles in feature-length films, for example in the award-winning coming-out drama "Corpo Elétrico" (PT 2017) and in the historical drama "Joaquim" (PT 2017), which premiered in the Competition of the Berlinale 2017. After that he was seen again in several Portuguese TV-series. He also continued to direct his own short films.

In 2018 Burhan Qurbani cast Bungué in the leading role of his modern film adaptation of Döblin’s "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (release: 2020), as an African refugee who loses himself in the criminal milieu of Berlin. The film celebrated its premiere in the Competition of the Berlinale 2020 and received a nomination in the category Best Male Lead at the German Film Awards 2020.
