Women Composers

Documentary film about four female composers of the 19th century whose works are hardly ever performed despite their importance and quality. Just as otherwise the repertoire of classical music performances is almost exclusively covered by men. This was a reason for pianist Kyra Steckeweh and filmmaker Tim van Beveren to embark on a search for clues to the lives and workplaces of the female composers Fanny Hensel (1805-1847), Emilie Mayer (1812-1883), Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) and Mélanie Bonis (1858-1937), some of whom had to fight massive opposition even during their lifetimes. In addition, they talk to musicologists and historians about the question of how the legacy of these women composers is dealt with and why their works are so rarely performed.
