Memelland
After visiting East Prussian regions in his documentary films "Kalte Heimat" ("Cold Homeland"), "Die Gilge", or "Kuhrische Nehrung", Volker Koepp went to the Lithuanian riverside of the Memel River for his documentary film "Memelland". The region has been inhabited by Germans and Lithuanians ever since and is called "Little Lithuania" by its inhabitants. Besides impressive and atmospheric images of nature, it is mainly the stories of the locals that convey a sense of the living conditions in this scenically unique and historically significant border region. They tell stories about the end of the war, about the time when Lithuania was a part of the Soviet Union, and about the present day situation that does not always look too bright.
