Melahat Özgü Namal was born on December 28, 1978, in Istanbul, Turkey. While still at school, she took acting classes at the Kadıköy Education Center and the Müjdat Gezen Theatre, and as a teenager she also appeared in several stage productions. After finishing secondary school, she studied until 2002 at the Theatre Department of the State Conservatory at Istanbul University.
Following her graduation, Namal worked primarily in television and film. Over the years, she received numerous awards in Turkey. After taking a break from acting between 2015 and 2023, she made a successful comeback with leading roles in the Turkish series "Kızıl Goncalar" (2023–2025) and "Kıskanmak" (from 2025).
Namal also starred in a leading role in the feature film "Gelbe Briefe" ("Yellow Letters," DE/FR/TR 2026) by German-Turkish filmmaker İlker Çatak. The social drama, set in Istanbul, centers on a government-critical artist couple facing increasing state repression; it won the Golden Bear at the 2026 Berlinale and was released in German cinemas shortly thereafter.
