Mehmet Sözer was born in 1991 in Vienna, Austria. From 2010 to 2014 he trained at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. During his studies he played a lead role at the Volksbühne Berlin in "Die fremde Frau und der Ehemann unter dem Bett," and together with his fellow performers received the ensemble prize at the Theatertreffen Deutschsprachiger Schauspielstudierender, the annual showcase festival for German‑language acting students, presenting award‑winning ensemble and individual performances from drama schools across German‑speaking countries.
After graduating, Sözer was a permanent ensemble member at the Münchner Volkstheater from 2014 to 2018, appearing in numerous stage productions of classic and contemporary plays. In the 2021/22 and 2023 seasons he performed at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
He made his film debut in 2015 with a leading role in "Das Wetter in geschlossenen Räumen" ("The Weather Inside"), playing a young drifter who begins an affair with the much older head (Maria Furtwängler) of a development project in an Arab conflict zone; the role earned him a New Faces Award nomination in 2016.
On television Sözer has appeared in several prominent guest roles, for example as a mentally unstable student and political activist in the "Tatort" crime drama “Schock” (2017) and as a suspect in an episode of the crime series "SOKO München" (2017). He had another leading film role in the Austrian drama "Der Gast" ("The Guest," 2019) as a mysterious visitor who upends the life of a wealthy family, and played a supporting role in the Grimme‑Award‑nominated coming‑of‑age series "Fett und Fett" (2019).
In February 2021 Sözer was one of 185 signatories of the #actout manifesto — a public mass coming‑out of queer people on the front page of the Süddeutsche Zeitung magazine — taking a stand against discrimination and calling for greater visibility and diversity in theatre, film and television.
In subsequent years he appeared on TV as a suspect in "Die Rosenheim‑Cops" (2023), as a bestselling relationship‑advice author in an episode of "Hotel Mondial" (2023), and as an overwhelmed young father in "In aller Freundschaft – Die jungen Ärzte" (2024).
"All We Ever Wanted," a drama about three carefree friends whose Canary Islands holiday unexpectedly turns into a desert‑bound journey of self‑discovery, premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2024; the film received its theatrical release in April 2026.
