Biography

Chara Mata Giannatou was born in Berlin in 1989 and grew up in Athens, Greece. Her grandfather was the actor Harald Leipnitz. Until 2013, Giannatou studied acting at the National Theatre of Greece in Athens before starting to work in productions of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival and the city's "Bios" theatre. In Germany, she played at the TPT Theater&Philharmonie Thüringen in productions of "Die Frauen von Troja" and "Blood Wedding".

She debuted in front of the camera in the theatrical release "Ein Atem" ("One Breath", 2015) directed by Christian Zübert, starring as a young Greek woman who works as a nanny for a wealthy German family. When both kid and nanny disappear, the mother sets out to find them. "Ein Atem" screened at several international festivals and opened in German theaters in January 2016. Subsequently, Giannatou belonged to the cast of the Greek tragicomedy "Notias" (GR 2016), a coming-of-age story set in 1960s and 1970s Greece.
