Alexander Merbeth was born on July 8, 1981, in Karlsruhe, Germany. From 2004 to 2007, he trained as an actor at the Frese Acting Studio in Hamburg. After graduating, he performed regularly on stage at theaters across Germany, including Hamburg's St. Pauli Theater, Theater Rampe in Stuttgart, Kampnagel Hamburg, and Berlin's Neuköllner Oper, among many others. Alongside his acting career, he studied film at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts from 2012 to 2016.
Beginning in 2008, Merbeth also became a regular presence in film and television. He was part of the central group of friends in the television horror film "Gonger 2 – Das Böse kehrt zurück" (2010), played the lead role of "The Man" in the post-apocalyptic drama "Endzeit" ("End of Time," 2013), and appeared as a member of an eccentric all-male literary circle in Arne Körner's offbeat comedy "Gasmann" ("Gasman," 2019).
From 2021 to 2024, Merbeth had a recurring supporting role in the comedy series "Die Discounter" as a homeless man living outside the supermarket at the center of the show. He also made guest appearances in series including "WaPo Bodensee" (2019), "Mord oder Watt?" (2023), and "Notruf Hafenkante" (2024). He landed a leading role in the feature drama "Flieg steil" ("Ascend"), playing a militant punk who forms an unlikely friendship with a musician from the far-right scene. Although filmed in 2019, the movie did not premiere until the 2024 Oldenburg International Film Festival, where it won the German Independence Award, before receiving its German theatrical release in the summer of 2026.
