Kino-Kriegsschau Nr. 14

The toned footage shows the destruction of the Russian port city of Novorossiisk after being shelled by the Turkish cruiser Midilli (formerly SMS Breslau) on October 29, 1914. The devastating attack was carried out at the same time as attacks on Sevastopol and Odessa and marked the beginning of the naval war in the Black Sea. Oil wells and tanks set on fire, railway bridges and ships destroyed, and the wreck of the Russian passenger ship Nikolai can be seen. The "Vladiskovska Railway" mentioned in one of the intertitles is the rail link between Novorossiisk and Vladikavkaz (in North Ossetia). Film producer Edmund Hubert of Berlin distributed this footage in January 1915 as part of his "Kino-Kriegsschau" series and promoted it as a sensation; it is unclear who shot it.
