Film synopsis: Based on true events, the war drama depicts the fate of German ship "Wilhelm Gustloff", which sank on January 30 1945 following a torpedo attack – with 6000 refugees on board. The story focuses on young Maria Reiser, whose husband leaves for the front shortly after the wedding. Maria falls in love with Hans, an officer of the "Wilhelm Gustloff", and soon expects a child from him. After meeting her husband again, she and her newborn child try to flee from East Prussia on board of the ship.

"Nacht fiel über Gotenhafen" was digitized by DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum as part of the film heritage funding program "Förderprogramm Filmerbe" (FFE) in 2023.
