Film synopsis: At the end of the 18th century, the rich French scholar Dr. Saussure comes to a small alpine village and offers 1000 gold pieces to whoever takes him to the summit of Mont Blanc. The young farmer's son Jacques Balmat wants to take on the dangerous task, even though his father told him from an early age on about the powerful mountain spirits who guard a legendary treasure of gold on the top of the mountain. The attempt fails and Balmat, suffering from snow blindness, must return to the village. But after some time, Dr. Saussure returns with his request and Balmat and his companion Paccard contact him again. In order to make the first ascent of Mont Blanc, Balmat, driven by ambition, leaves his pregnant wife Maria behind in the village and sets off on his journey.
