Recordings of an orthopedic surgeon demonstrating the Krukenberg clamp and various arm prostheses. Skill exercises. People without hands or arms in everyday situations: eating, playing cards, dressing up.

Carl Mau served as a medical officer and battalion doctor in the 12th Bavarian Infantry Regiment during World War I. After the war, he began his specialized training as a surgeon and orthopedist at the Surgical University Clinic in Kiel under Max Brandes. He headed the orthopedic department there from 1923 to 1928. The people shown in the photographs are confirmed victims of World War I, but the images may have been taken later during his work in the orthopedic department. Because the exact date is uncertain and it's unclear whether the film was copied, it has been tentatively dated between 1923 and 1925.
