Summary

The painter Michael Triegel stands out clearly from his colleagues of the Leipzig School—especially from his close friend Neo Rauch. Known for a style reminiscent of the Renaissance, he receives in 2020 a commission of extraordinary significance: to recreate the lost central panel of the Marian Altar in Naumburg Cathedral. The original work by Lucas Cranach the Elder was destroyed almost 500 years ago, and with no surviving references to the depiction of the Virgin Mary, Triegel faces the challenge of creating a new image that still fits within the historical visual language. The documentary follows the artist over several years, capturing not only the complex process of creating this monumental painting but also the questions, doubts, and convictions that shape Triegel’s work. It offers insights into his working methods and his engagement with faith, tradition, and artistic responsibility. Shortly after its completion, the work also sparks debate: a UNESCO committee raises concerns about the new altar.
