The Witness

Summary

Retired teacher Tarlan witnesses how her friend Rana, a dance teacher, is killed by her husband Solat – an influential government official – after he had told her to stop dancing in public. Despite bribery attempts and family problems caused by her imprisoned son Salar, Tarlan reports the incident to the police. But Solat remains untouched, and the authorities begin to put pressure on Tarlan: she is threatened, her family turns against her, and a falsified psychological report strips her of credibility as a witness. When she realizes that the judicial route is blocked, she protests publicly with a placard naming Solat as the perpetrator – a step that leads to her arrest and committal to a psychiatric hospital.
