Study No. 8

For his "Studies", Oskar Fischinger produced charcoal drawings which he animated in a second step. Each of these short films required several hundred sketches. These drawings were used as film negatives, meaning that the black shapes are represented as white shapes before a black background in the final film. Fischinger synchronised these non-figurative, non-narrative animations of abstract shapes to well-known pieces of jazz and classical music. Paul Dukas′ "The Sorcerer′s Apprentice" provides the musical basis for Study No. 8. "Study No. 8" is incomplete as Fischinger could not purchase the necessary rights to the music und stopped the project in march 1931. He published a new version in 1932.
