Summary
Hannes Schönemann’s documentary portrays several youngsters in rural Mecklenburg, accompanying them at home, work and on their recreational activities over three consecutive days. His images offer an undistorted picture of aspects only hinted at in DEFA features, mirror the subjects’ everyday life and search for direction without ideological colouring or condescension. Such a perspective was bound to fall foul of a cultural policy that sought ideal images rather than realistic depictions, and the student director immediately attracted the scrutiny of the Ministry of State Security. Schönemann was subsequently arrested in 1984, and was jailed for several months then deported to the West.
