She then did an internship at the Bayerischer Rundfunk Fernsehen (Studio Franken, Nuremberg), where she continued working as a freelancer.

From 2005 to 2011 Welker studied animation (directing) at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. Her diploma animation film "Krake" (2011), about children with cancer, was awarded the members prize at the Caligari Film Prize.

From 2012 to 2015 she was a lecturer at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. She has also worked as an animation artist, co-director and producer on several short animated films, including contributions to the SWR series "Ich kenne ein Tier" (2012-2013, directed by Verena Fels). In 2013 she joined the animation filmmaking collective Woodblock.tv.
