Biography

Jonas Grosch, born November 25, 1981, in Freiburg im Breisgau, started to study comparative literature and philosophy but then changed for Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen (HFF) in Potsdam where he studied in the department of screenplay and dramatic composition.

With his feature-length debut "Der Weiße mit dem Schwarzbrot" ("White Man with Black Bread", 2007), he already drew a lot of attention from film critics although he was still studying in Potsdam. In the documentary film, Grosch portrayed his uncle, the writer and actor Christof Wackernagel who was imprisoned as a member of RAF until 1987 and in the meantime lives in Mali, Africa, as a socially active dropout. After his screenplay for "Polska Love Serenade" (2008), the graduation film of Monika Wojtyllo, his fellow student from HFF, Grosch finished his own HFF graduation film. The female leading role in his romantic comedy "Resisté – Aufstand der Praktikanten" ("Resist! Intern Rebellion") that opened in cinemas in late 2009 is played by Grosch's sister Katharina Wackernagel.

He then portrayed Germany's longest serving Ska band in the documentary "The Busters – Eine Band für die Ewigkeit" (2010). His second feature film was also musically themed: The characters in the romantic comedy "Die letzte Lüge" ("The Last Lie", 2011) burst into song when they express their feelings. And like in "Résiste", Katharina Wackernagel played one of the leads.

For the documentary "A Silent Rockumentary", Grosch was inspired by old silent movies: The film about the Mannheim-based country-punk-folk band Mardi Gras.BB uses title cards instead of on-screen dialogue, and the only thing which can be heard are the band's songs. In the title cards, the band also comments on the ongoing debate about copyright infringement and illegal downloads, which are threatening artists like them. The film was released in Germany in Summer 2013.
