Lost Sons

Deutschland Schweden Dänemark 1997-1999 Dokumentarfilm

Summary

In the US he is known as "Fuehrer-Ex", charismatic, magnetic, fascinating: Ingo Hasselbach, one of the cult leaders of the German Neonazis. In 1993, he left the movement in a dramatic gesture and published three books. He has become a compulsive media figure and worldwide bestselling author on the "Far Right".

Since then, Hasselbach has converted and wants to warn young people of the darkness of right-wing extremism. He is still in search for a normal life, still chased by his former comrades who want to kill him. Together with Swedish director Fredrik von Krusenstjerna he undertakes a fascinating journey into his troubled past. One trace leads to his father Hans Canje (69) who was one of the few survivors of a Hitler Youth bataillon and a fervent believing Nazi. An encounter with a concentration camp prisoner turned his life upside down. Hans became a convinced Communist, prosecuted and imprisoned by the West German State. In 1963, he escaped to the GDR where he rose to become one of the heads of the state propaganda machine.
Lost Sons investigates a gripping and multilayered story of a father and son. What made one a Communist, and the other a Nazi?
