Kapitäne bleiben an Bord

DDR 1958/1959 Spielfilm

Summary

Kurt Kars is a dedicated fisherman. The young captain′s enthusiasm and huge ambition make up for his lack of experience. The prospect of highly profitable fishing grounds makes him forget all cautiousness: Although specifically prohibited by the state combine, he steers his fishing boat into the Arctic Sea. When the cutter crashes into drift ice, Kurt and his crew find themselves in huge danger. Although the young captain manages to avoid a disaster, he has to justify himself to the state combine. Kurt′s first impulse is to pack it all in, but little by little he realizes that is actions were wrong. And he is not the only one: Eventually, the seasoned captains, who have always kept their knowledge of good fishing grounds a secret, realize that they have acted selfishly and not for the greater good, thereby carelessly causing crises such as the one involving Kars.
