Inflation

Deutschland 1928 Experimentalfilm

Summary

A criticism of capitalism using avant-garde means, in keeping with Richter’s argument that "even invisible things must be made visible". In this experimental collage of animated numbers and documentary images, he shows the increase and devaluation of money, and the winners and losers of inflation during an economic crisis. Within seconds, a wealthy man reading a newspaper becomes a beggar, the zeros on the banknotes multiply – right up until the stock exchange physically collapses.

The film was made as an avant-garde documentary introduction to Wilhelm Thiele's feature film "Die Dame mit der Maske".
