Chingachgook

North America in the year 1740: The colonial war between England and France badly affects the Indian tribes on the continent. Thus, the French set up the Huron tribe against the Delaware tribe to kidnap Wahtawah, the daughter of the chief of the Delaware tribe. Mohican Chingachgook, who is supposed to marry Wahtawah, wants to free his lover together with his friend Deerslayer. But on their way to the Huron camp, they encounter a group of scalp hunters. Chingachgook is captured by the Hurons and fails to convince the tribe of the disingenuousness of both war parties. It is not until British troops, who were called in by the scalp hunters, utterly defeat the Huron tribe, that the badly wounded Huron chief is made to see reason. The Indians realize that the war of the white men is not their conflict and thus conclude peace. Together with Wahtawah and Deerslayer, Chingachgook returns to the Delaware tribe.

Gojko Mitic begründet nach seiner Rolle des Tokei-ihto in Josef Machs erstem Defa-Indianerfilm „Die Söhne der großen Bärin“ 1966 spätestens mit der Rolle der „Großen Schlange“ seine außergewöhnliche Karriere als „der“ Indsman der DDR. „Chingachgook – Die große Schlange“, entstanden frei nach dem Roman „Wildtöter“ von James Fenimore Cooper, feierte den „Sommerfilmtagen“ 1967 in der Freilichtbühne Rostock seine Uraufführungs-Premiere. Schon die ersten Bilder des Kameramannes Otto Hanisch machen das Bemühen um realistische Darstellung deutlich: Richard Groschopp legte mindestens ebenso viel Gewicht auf ethnologische Korrektheit wie auf Action-Szenen eines unterhaltenden Abenteuerfilms, allerdings - und glücklicherweise - ohne den schwer erträglichen Kitsch der Karl-May-Filme westlicher Produktion, vom Winnetou/Old Shatterhand-Pathos ganz zu schweigen. Die Ausstattung beansprucht Authentizität, der vor allem zu Beginn zum Einsatz kommende Erzähler historisch-korrekte aufklärerische Kompetenz – naturgemäß aus gesicherter ideologischer, also antiimperialistischer und antiamerikanischer Position.
