Guardian of the Frontier
Three college students from Ljubljana take a canoe trip down the Kolpa, a river that forms the border between Croatia and Slovenia. They enjoy independence, freedom and sexual self-discovery – though they can't escape the leering gaze of a self-appointed border guard. Between shots of mystical landscapes and confrontations with the conservative Slovenian "guardian", the girlfriends undergo diverse experiences that push at their boundaries. Maja Weiss' film was way ahead of its time: queer-feminist themes and the critical examination of politics and nationalism are deftly interwoven in this gripping mystery-thriller.
