Biography

Jan Schomburg, born in Aachen in 1976, first studied visual communication at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and then completed a course in film direction at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne (KHM). In 1999 he was co-director of the award-winning compilation film "Winterspruch - Arbeit für Eisler". His student short film "Nie solo SeiN" ("Never EveN", 2004) was screened at several festivals and was awarded the Hessian Film Prize, among others. Jan Schomburg made his feature film debut with the TV film "Innere Werte" (2007), a science-fiction grotesque set in a beauty clinic. In 2008 Schomburg received a scholarship at the Andrzej Wajda Film School in Warsaw.

His first feature film "Über uns das All" ("Above Us Only Sky") premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale 2011. The drama about a woman who discovers that her husband has been leading a double life for years received excellent reviews and was awarded prizes at the Festival of German Film in Ludwigshafen, among others. Leading actress Sandra Hüller received the German Film Critics' Prize for her performance. Schomburg's second feature film "Vergiss mein Ich" ("Lose My Self") celebrated its world premiere in 2014 in the competition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was released in German cinemas in May of the same year. The film was also screened at the German Film Festival in Ludwigshafen, where it won the Film Art Prize.

For TV, Schomburg directed the crime comedy "Ein Mord mit Aussicht" (2015), the critically acclaimed finale of the "Mord mit Aussicht" series (2007-2014). The film was nominated for the prestigious Grimme Award. He also wrote the screenplay for the international co-production "Vor der Morgenröte - Stefan Zweig in Amerika" ("Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe", 2015), directed for the big screen by Maria Schrader. The film received several awards, Schomburg and Schrader were nominated for the screenplay prize at the German Film Critics' Award.

Again for TV, Schomburg directed the sketch-comedy series "Rabenmütter" (2016-2018). Afterwards he realized another film for the big screen: The comedy "Der göttliche Andere" ("The Big Other", 2020) was about a reporter who wants to court an aspiring nun in Rome, whereby God himself seems to put all kinds of obstacles in his way. The film was released in German cinemas in August 2020.
