Now at the Movies: Xoftex

When it comes to migration, public attention has long focussed on discussions about upper limits, rejections and deportations. The human fates behind the numbers seem to be of little interest. All the more important is a film that is now being released in our cinemas and whose genesis is as exciting as its plot. Noaz Deshe developed it together with refugees in workshops in refugee camps - including the notorious Softex camp in Greece. In a fascinating mixture of documentary, fictional and fantasy elements, "Xoftex" tells the story of Nasser and Yassin, two Palestinian-Syrian brothers who have been stuck in a camp for years waiting for a decision on their asylum application. Condemned to do nothing, they pass the time by dreaming of a better future and filming little sketches. But Nasser's mood becomes increasingly hopeless, and the growing tensions in the camp drive him into a fantasy world in which the reality of the camp becomes more and more like a zombie film... As uncompromisingly as the film shows the harshness of reality, its surreal beauty and poetry are just as haunting - moving testimony to the human ability to discover one's own freedom through art and creativity, even in the most adverse circumstances.

Helmut Poßmann neuer Kuratoriumsvorsitzender der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung

Am 16. April 2025 verabschiedete das Kuratorium der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung seinen Vorsitzenden Christian Sommer. Seit 2011 war Sommer als Vertreter des Verband Technischer Betriebe für Film und Fernsehen e.V. (VTFF) Mitglied im Kuratorium, seit 2015 dessen Vorsitzender.

Das Programm des 40. DOK.fest München

Das Programm des 40. DOK.fest München ist veröffentlicht und kann ab sofort auf der Webseite des Festivals eingesehen werden. Insgesamt sind bei der diesjährigen Edition, die im Kino von 7. bis 18. Mai und online von 12. bis 25. Mai stattfindet, 105 Filme aus 58 Ländern zu sehen.

Die European Film Academy erweitert ihre Liste der "Treasures of European Film Culture" um weitere elf Orte. Mit dieser Auszeichnung würdigt die Akademie Orte, die symbolisch für das europäische Kino stehen und von herausragender filmhistorischer Bedeutung sind, mithin Orte deren historischer Wert jetzt und für kommende Generationen erhalten und geschützt werden sollten.
