The documentary filmmaker Walter Steffen has repeatedly dealt with the cultural peculiarities of his Bavarian homeland, for example with the Upper Bavarian music scene in "Bavaria Vista Club" (2014) and with the raftsmen of the Isar in "Fahr ma obi am Wasser" ("Ride the River", 2017). In his latest film "Alpgeister" he investigates the myths, legends and mysteries of the Bavarian Alps. Once upon a time, people in that region had a strong belief in an otherworldly reality, in which magical powers are at work. For many people, the mountains with their dark caves and ancient forests are still the scene of inexplicable phenomena today. Rumour has it that earth spirits and fairies are living in a mountain massif near Berchtesgaden. "Everyday life in our time of functional materialism creates a spiritual vacuum", says Steffen, "which awakens many people's longing for new spirituality, for old rites and mysterious and inexplicable worlds". The filmmaker talks to the inhabitants of the region and combines the stories with impressive shots of the landscape and atmospheric images. Thus, he succeeds in giving an entertaining and fascinating insight into a spiritual world view that one has learnt to suppress as a modern and "enlightened" person.
