Summary
The documentary follows Düsseldorf-based painter Bernd Schwarzer, whose entire body of work is devoted to a single goal: an uncompromising artistic commitment to Europe. His works are displayed in museums and political institutions, including the German Bundestag and Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of Germany's federal president. As Schwarzer remains steadfast in pursuing his vision, his life increasingly begins to unravel. Conflicts with collectors, gallery owners, and longtime companions accumulate, and the boundary between artistic obsession and personal crisis starts to blur. At the same time, the film portrays an eccentric art world and revisits the enduring idea of the fine line between genius and madness. It explores the tensions between creativity, freedom, self-fashioning, and the art market, asking how far extraordinary talent can carry someone before it turns into self-destruction.
