Max is a small-time crook with a big heart. On the run from the law, he hides in the bedroom of unknown Ilse, who even tells the police that Max is her boyfriend. Nevertheless, he is sentenced to three days in jail. While in custody, he makes the acquaintance of Bruno, who keeps following him after their release from prison.

Meanwhile Ilse, who was evicted by her landlady because of Max, wins a beauty pageant. Max tries to reach her, but his new ‘life-time friend’ Bruno always prevents him from meeting Ilse. Finally, miserable Max returns home, where surprisingly Ilse is already waiting for him. Happily reunited, the two embrace.
