When pensioner Johannes Obermaier is found battered to death in his house, the police arrests the young Maria Lorenz as the main suspect. She had been taken care of the lonely old man during the last months – and had been appointed as the sole heir to Obermaier′s fortune. But Maria seems to have a watertight alibi. During his investigation, inspector Tauber finds out that the young woman had been working as a prostitute and apparently had been robbing older single men of their fortune several times. A number of wearing interrogations reveal that Maria is a broken woman who had been forced by her brutal pimp to trick the old men. But is she a murderer, too?
