Biography

Saskia Rosendahl was born in Halle an der Saale in 1993. Already at the age of 8, she performed in the Halle opera as a member of the children ballet troupe. From 2008 on, she appeared in productions of the improvisational theatre "Kaltstart" and the Neues Theater Halle. In 2010, she completed a performance workshop and subsequently was cast in a supporting role in "Für Elise", which marked her debut in front of the camera.

She landed her first leading role with Cate Shortland's drama "Lore" (2012): Her portrayal of a daughter of high-ranking Nazis who travels through a devastated Germany with her siblings in order to reach her Grandma and along the way gradually sees Nazi ideology as the lie it is, impressed critics and audiences alike. At the Stockholm International Film Festival she won Best Actress for this role; at the Australian AACTA Award she was awarded the prize for Best Young Actress in 2013. In the same year she was declared one of ten European "Shooting Stars" of the European Film Promotion (EFP) at the Berlinale; at the New Faces Awards she received a nomination as Best Young Actress.

In Vivian Naefe's film adaptation of the bestseller "Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen" ("The Taste of Apple Seeds", 2013), Rosendahl played the central part of Berta at a young age. In the psychodrama "Zum Geburtstag" ("A Pact", 2013) director Denis Dercourt cast her in a key role as the daughter of a happily married couple whose life is thrown off track by an ancient promise of the father. The TV fairytale film "Der Teufel mit den drei goldenen Haaren" (2013) showed her as a spoiled and stuck-up princess. More serious fare was the multiple award-winning drama "Wir sind jung. Wir sind stark." ("We Are Young. We Are Strong.", 2015), with Rosendahl as a friend of a neo-Nazi from Rostock who attacks an asylum seekers' home.

After further supporting roles as the complacent sister of the main character in Nicolette Krebitz's provocative drama "Wild" (2015) and as a wild, beautiful friend of the inconspicuous protagonist (Anna Fischer) in Hermine Huntgeburth's "Aufbruch" ("Departure", 2016, TV), Rosendahl played another leading role in a feature film in "Nirgendwo" ("Nowhere", 2016) as the former great love of a disoriented student who returns to his provincial hometown after the death of his father.

Hans-Christian Schmid cast Rosendahl in a leading role in his award-winning series "Das Verschwinden" (2017), in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's (fictionalized) Gerhard Richter biopic "Werk ohne Autor" ("Never Look Away", 2018) she was the art-loving aunt of the main character. She had a minor role in the psychodrama "Prélude" (2019), as a childhood friend of a psychologically unstable music student. Alongside Edin Hasanović and Julius Feldmeier she appeared in the mystery love story "Mein Ende. Dein Anfang." ("Relativity", 2019), followed by the Udo Lindenberg biopic "Lindenberg! Mach dein Ding!" (2020) and Dominik Graf's Kästner adaptation "Fabian" (2021).

In early August 2021, Sabrina Sarabi's drama "Niemand ist bei den Kälbern" ("No One's with the Calves") premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival. In the literary adaptation based on the novel of the same name by Alina Herbig, Rosendahl plays the lead role of a young woman who wants to escape the bleakness of her boyfriend's dairy farm in the German province of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. For this role, she was again nominated for the German Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2022.
