Biography

Manuela Biedermann, born 1965 in Basel, Switzerland, studied acting with the "Dramatisches Studio" in Bern and Burgdorf. Subsequently, she worked with the Théâtre pour enfants de Lausanne (TPEL), the Theater Arte in Basel (1991/92) and with the Theater am Turm in Frankfurt am Main (1992/93). From 1993 through 1996, she was an ensemble member at the Stadttheater St. Gallen, where amongst others she played the lead role in "Miss Julie" (1993) and Queen Elizabeth in "Richard III" (1995). She also starred in plays for Stadttheater Luzern (1997), Stadttheater Bern (1998) and for Kulturmarkt Zürich (2005/2005).

Since the late 1990s, Manuela Biedermann has been focusing her work increasingly on film and TV. She appeared in numerous Swiss short films and played smaller as well as bigger supporting roles in TV and film productions, such as in Petra Biondina Volpe's emancipation story "Schönes Wochenende" (CH 2006, TV) and in Lutz Konermann’s tragic comedy "Der Fürsorger oder das Geld der Anderen" ("The Welfare Worker", CH 2009). She starred in the French TV series "Un village français" ("A French Village", 2012) as well as in the French TV film "Les Malgré-elles" ("Against Their Will", 2012), portraying the director of a French Lebensborn home. Philipp Stölzl cast her for his lavish period film "Der Medicus" ("The Physician", 2013) to play an aging prostitute, in the Swiss military comedy "Achtung, fertig, WK!" ("Ready, Steady, Ommm!", 2013) she appeared in a small role as a bordello queen. Her portrayal of Angela Merkel in the political satire "Das schaffen wir schon" (2017) earned Manuela Biedermann many positive reviews. Subsequently, she starred in Peter Greenaway’s "Walking to Paris" (IT/CH/FR 2017), a biopic about the famous sculptor Constantin Brâncusi.
