Biography

Tobias Krell was born in 1986 in Mainz, Germany, the son of a musicologist and a cameraman. Through his father's profession, he came into contact with the world of television at an early age, which, according to his own statement, awakened his desire to work in television in the future. After graduating from high school, he completed a bachelor's degree in sociology and political science in Münster, followed by a master's degree in media studies at the Academy for Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam-Babelsberg, which he completed in 2014.

As a student, Krell gained practical experience as a writer and editor in various print, radio and television editorial departments. From 2008 to 2013 he worked as a reporter for the SWR program "Dasding.tv" and from 2010 to 2012 he was the director of the International Student Film Festival Sehsüchte.

Tobias Krell's breakthrough in television came even before he graduated from the HFF. In 2013, he beat out 160 competitors for the opportunity to host the show "Checker Tobi" on the children's channel Kika. This educational program for children became incredibly successful and received a special award at the Bavarian Television Awards in 2016. At the beginning of 2019, a movie based on the series, "Checker Tobi und das Geheimnis unseres Planeten" was released, which also achieved considerable success. In the same year, Krell made a guest appearance as himself in the movie "Alfons Zitterbacke - Das Chaos ist zurück" ("Alfons Zitterbacke - The Return of the Chaos").

Together with Gregor Eisenbeiß, Krell launched a "Checker Tobi" non-fiction series in 2021. Also in 2021, he took over the direction of the Kinderfilmfest München and hosted the children's quiz show "Die beste Klasse Deutschlands" (Germany's Best Class) together with Clarissa Corrêa da Silva. In autumn 2023, "Checker Tobi und die Reise zu den fliegenden Flüssen", a second feature film based on Krell's still successful TV knowledge show, was launched. In addition to his regular TV engagements, Tobias Krell also works as a freelance presenter.
