When the Germans invade Poland, Ruth is 12 or 13 years old. During the persecution of the Jews, which begins immediately, she manages to escape. Having to fend for herself, she has to fight her way through the country. She finds help, experiences betrayal and suffers from the constant danger of death, of the ever-present fear of being discovered and of starvation. Ruth survives.
