Opera Fanatic

Deutschland 1998/1999 Dokumentarfilm

Summary

Opera Franatic

A journey into the guts of the Italian opera of the fifties. Stefan Zucker, the "world′s highest tenor", an eccentric opera fanatic from New York, visits the opera divas of his childhood: Magda Olivero, Anita Cerquetti, Giulietta Simonato, Leyla Gencer ...

The journey from diva to diva, from apartment to apartment, from Rome via Florence, Bologna, Padua and Bergamo to the Scala in Milan turns into an opera road movie. "Today personality doesn′t exist. Either they don′t know what it is, or they don′t have the courage. ′I understand what you′re saying′, pupils tell me, ′but I don′t know how to do it′ ". (Giulietta Simionato) "If one just sings, without putting in any heart or soul, it remains just beautiful singing, and not a soul that sings." (Magda Olivero) "We live in the age of Barbie Doll opera - singers who move well and look good but express little." (Stefan Zucker)
