Synopsis

The Last Bridge

Head nurse Helga manages the German military hospital Bjelo Jezero in the Balkans together with a doctor. She is in love with Martin Berger, a German officer, whose squad is constantly under fire by Yugoslav guerillas. One day, Helga is abducted by the guerillas after being lured away from the camp. The guerillas want her to save the life of a doctor from the enemy side but the procedure fails. Now, Helga feels responsible for the lifes of the guerillas, too. During an epidemic typhoid fever, Helga affronts all dangers and tries to smuggle medicine from the German camp to the guerillas. In order to get the medicine to the guerillas, Helga has to cross a bridge between enemy lines. When both sides open fire, Helga is hit by a ricochet shot and, with the last of her strength, manages to deliver the urgently needed medicine to the guerillas.
