Cemile oder das Märchen von der Hoffnung

Cemile oder das Märchen von der Hoffnung

Deutschland 1996, Spielfilm

Synopsis

Cemile

The young Kurd Cemile gets through life on her own with her children in the southeast of Turkey. She goes a long time without any news of her husband, for he had to flee to Germany after taking part in a forbidden demonstration in Istanbul. One day, Cemile is raped on a plantation as she tries to get something
to eat for her children. Kasim is subsequently deported from Germany.
Returning home unexpectedly, he makes his wife go along with him to the
village of his father. But Cemile does not fit into the archaic system
and is rejected by the family as a source of bad luck. Her conflict
becomes an existential one when she realises that she has become
pregnant from the rape. The village community will never accept her
innocence. She takes her children and leaves the village when her
husband is denounced and finally arrested. A way to a new hope?
